Kate Middleton has long been admired for her refined and elegant style — but one bold fashion choice from eight years ago continues to stand out as a rare risk in her otherwise polished wardrobe.
Back in July 2017, while visiting Germany alongside Prince William, the Princess of Wales made an unexpected style statement at a reception held at Berlin’s historic Claerchens Ballhaus. Then 35, Kate stepped out in one of her most daring shoe choices to date — a pair of nude suede Prada sandals featuring a scalloped, gladiator-style design and high, strappy heels.
Fashion stylist Angela Kyte recently reflected on the moment with HELLO!, noting that the sandals were a striking departure from Kate’s signature classic pumps.
“The Princess of Wales typically opts for elegant, timeless footwear,” Kyte said. “These strappy gladiator heels were a surprising but refreshing shift. They added a breezy, almost bohemian vibe that we don’t often see in her public appearances.”
Kate complemented the bold heels with a soft yet striking printed midi dress by designer Markus Lupfer. The green and blue tones of the dress balanced the edginess of the sandals, creating a look that was both fashion-forward and perfectly suited for a summer evening event.
“The neutral tone of the shoes kept them event-appropriate, but the crisscross straps and open ankle added a touch of sensuality,” Kyte explained. “It was a subtle flirtation with trendier fashion — a way of nodding to contemporary style without straying too far from royal convention.”
Despite the risk, Kate wore the look with poise and confidence — and clearly appreciated the standout sandals herself. She went on to rewear them at a Berlin garden party and most recently in 2023 at the royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa in Jordan. For that occasion, she paired them with a flowing Elie Saab gown, letting the distinctive shoes peek through as she walked.
While the now-iconic heels haven’t been seen in her wardrobe in recent years, fashion watchers remain hopeful they’ll make a return.
After all, eight years later, the look remains one of Kate Middleton’s most memorable — a subtle break from tradition that still inspires admiration.
