Country music legend Ronnie McDowell was rushed to a hospital Saturday night after experiencing a medical emergency during his performance at the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley, Pennsylvania.
According to a report by WKRN, the 75-year-old was just a few songs into his set when he began slurring his words and speaking incoherently. Concerned by McDowell’s unusual behavior, his tour manager quickly pulled him to the side of the stage and asked if he was feeling alright. McDowell reportedly responded, “No,” and told his manager he feared he might be having a stroke.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in Reading, where he remained as of Sunday undergoing further medical evaluation, including an MRI scan.
Fans and fellow artists have since been keeping a close eye on updates from the singer’s family. McDowell’s son, Tyler Dean McDowell — a country artist in his own right — took to Facebook on Sunday to share news and reassure supporters.
“Just wanted to let everyone know — I made it to Pennsylvania,” Tyler posted. “Ronnie Dean & I are in the room with Dad. He’s talking to us, and we’re waiting to do the MRI. As soon as I know more, so will y’all. Love Forever.”
A few hours later, Tyler shared a more light-hearted update, reflecting the family’s positive spirit during the difficult time.
“2nd update: Brought dad some Popcorners and a Kombucha (snacks he likes),” he wrote. “Ronnie Dean brought his comfy shoes, favorite brush, and Vietnam hat. Dad was very excited about all this — like a kid in a candy store. Figured y’all could use a lil’ levity.”
Ronnie McDowell first made waves in country music in 1977, launching a career that would span decades. His breakout hit, “The King Is Gone,” a tribute to Elvis Presley following the icon’s death, became both a country and pop chart success. Over the years, McDowell racked up over 30 Top 40 hits on the Billboard country charts, including two No. 1 songs: “Older Woman” and “You’re Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation.” Eleven more singles reached the top 10.
As news of McDowell’s hospitalization spread, fellow country musicians and fans expressed their support and well-wishes. Country singer Bobby Mackey tweeted a message of encouragement along with a nostalgic photo of McDowell performing:
“Memorable show at #americashonkytonk back in the day,” he wrote. “Sending healing prayers and thoughts to Ronnie McDowell.”
While McDowell remains in the hospital as doctors run tests, fans across the country are hopeful for his full recovery. With family by his side and spirits seemingly high, the country music community continues to rally around the beloved performer whose music has touched generations.
